2021 Annual Newsletter

President’s Message

Dear leaders of IFSAM member associations, dear GA, BoD and AB members, dear deputies, ambassadors and staff, dear colleagues, dear all.

Please let me start by thanking you for your trust and contributions to IFSAM during the last year.

2021 was an extremely eventful, even historical, year for the Federation, in at least six counts.

First, after the approval by the former Excom of the vision 2024 in Dec 2020 around the 30 years’ celebration, the federation initiated its efforts to deliver for the first time on its statutory soft policy objective of ‘establishing and maintaining standards of competence in management research, education and practice’. In January 2021 we started a consultation process of 5 webinars for the first soft policy statement, devoted to management research, which was approved by the GA in June and is since being diffused in different languages and through the member associations. The main insights of this consultation process were also embedded in five instalments of the first publication of the federation, also set up in 2021, the Conversation letters, with the cooperation of many of the panellists from the webinars, including the co-chairs, leaders of different member and observer associations.

Second, the year 2021 also saw the call for IFSAM four inaugural awards, an initiative approved in 2019 and which by recognizing outstanding, exemplar performance in management education, research service and practice we promote them. It is also our way to give a substantial part of IFSAM membership fees back to the worldwide community.

Third, also in January and due to the pandemic, we launched a new activity, the quarterly presidents’ platform meetings to gather information and insights on how each member and observer association as well as IFSAM itself were dealing and could deal with the pandemic for its annual conferences, bringing external speakers and conference service providers to garner a broader view. The organization of these meetings has been taken over by the office of the presidential team, also created in 2021, and led by Prof. Patrick Reinmoeller.

Fourth, 8 associations (re)joined the Federation during 2021: ACACIA, ACEDE, AMG, ANPAD, ASSG, ATC, BAM and CAMS. Their participation has reinvigorated the Federation. We are very grateful to their leaders who made this possible. With them, the Federation in 2021 totalled 21 member associations and two observer associations.

Fifth, late December 2021, IFSAM was incorporated in Belgium, after 9 months of very hard work, which included changes in the statutes. I would like to thank former Secretary General Prof. Arabella Mocciaro Li Destri and then deputy secretary Prof. Elisa Martinelli (now Secretary General) for their outstanding commitment and work in this matter, along with then President Elect Prof. Isabelle Bouty. The incorporation sets new governance standards for all of us. We count on your cooperation for fulfilling them. Going forward, we will learn how to implement these new governance requirements and, as any organization, we will have to make some adaptations based on the learnings.

Sixth, 2021 was also historical in terms of building of the Federation’s organizational capacity, with the creation of four new vice-presidencies, one for each statutory domain of soft policy (education, research, and practice), and another for communication. The new VPs (Silviya Svejenova, research; André Leao Maranhao, education; Lee Lu, practice, and Emma Parry, communication) were elected by the GA and their deputies appointed. A new VP position for new membership and governance was also approved and its nomination and election process activated, together with the position of President Elect, for which Prof. Ouidade Sabri and Prof. Sandro Castaldo were respectively elected early Jan 2022. The Advisory Board was also installed during 2021 and had its first meeting on Nov 15 under the leadership of Prof. Alain Burlaud, the inaugural chair, appointing Prof. Felicity Kelliher as the inaugural secretary of the AB. Many thanks to both for their supportive and dedicated effort.

I would like to thank the other colleagues of the former executive committee (now BoD) for their trust and help in the transition: Michael Morley (then past president), Yvon Pesqueux (then treasurer), Sibel Yamak (member at large) and last but not least Yang Zhang (then president and now past president). A special thanks to Yvon for his exceptional, outstanding service as Treasurer for so many years and for his role as acting Treasurer before the transition to the new Treasurer, Prof. Wafa Khlif, who has already taken us into a better operational banking situation.

Finally, I would like to mention the two people who ‘behind the curtains’ (or more precisely behind the general info email address) contribute to the successful operations of the federation. I am referring to Eleonora Piacenza, our media master and more, and to Andrea di Carlo, our administrative assistant. Grazie mille to both for their unfailing and always available support.

To conclude, this annual newsletter, which is a statutory requirement that we are again fulfilling, is the joint product of the work of the prior communications’ team (Emma Parry and Minjie Cai) and the new VP comm, Prof. Guadalupe Calderón. Special thanks to all of them for making it a reality.

I wish 2022 will bring greater stability and reach to IFSAM thanks to all your advice, support, dedication, and effort.

Warm regards,

Xavier Castañer

Call for IFSAM Inaugural Awards

In May 2021, IFSAM General Assembly approved the proposal of its committee on awards to call for the following 4 IFSAM Inaugural Awards. Recognition was accompanied by a monetary amount of 1.500 euros for each award.

IFSAM Award for Excellence in Societally Relevant Management Scholarship

IFSAM places particular value on published scientific research in management which improves our understanding of the ways in which society can be advanced and the world made a better place. To give expression to this value, the Federation inaugurated the IFSAM Award for Excellence in Societally Relevant Management Scholarship. This award aims to encourage researchers to prioritize research which serves society. The award was given to published research which addresses societal challenges at local and/or global levels with the aim of contributing to societal wellbeing.

This could be done, for example, through empirical studies which investigate different types of organizations (e.g., traditional businesses, social enterprises, NGOs) and various groups and individuals (e.g., disadvantaged groups, employees, employers, and other stakeholders) in relation to real life problems and sustainable development goals. An alternative approach was through conceptual works which problematize the existing values, structures, and practices to emancipate individuals and society as a whole and which introduce innovative ways of dealing with existing and future problems.

IFSAM Award for Excellence in Indigenous Management Scholarship

IFSAM is dedicated to the development of management research and teaching as a field of scientific inquiry and its advancement in all nations. To give expression to the centrality of diverse, contextualized, authentic, embedded management scholarship, the Federation inaugurated the IFSAM Award for Excellence in Indigenous Management Scholarship. The aim of the award is to encourage, recognize and celebrate outstanding indigenous research in the field of business and management (all subfields included) from around the world. We were especially interested in research where the intellectual tradition, the phenomenon of interest, and the way it is explored and communicated are of relevance to the context in which the research takes place and where a commitment to their pursuit yields meaningful insights of value to stakeholders in that context and beyond.

IFSAM Award for Excellence and Innovation in Management Pedagogy

IFSAM is dedicated to the development of management research and teaching as a field of scientific inquiry. To give tangible expression to the centrality of pedagogy as part of this effort, the Federation inaugurated the IFSAM Award for Excellence and Innovation in Management Pedagogy. The aim of the award was to identify, showcase and share excellent, impactful pedagogy in the field of business and management (all subfields included) from around the world. The award was made to an individual, team or organization based on a sustained commitment to pedagogy in their operating context. Drawing from the Federation’s contextualized approach, differences in pedagogy (i.e., way of teaching) across different contexts will be considered.

IFSAM Award for Exceptional Service to the Management Field Worldwide

This award was made in recognition of significant and enduring service to the management scholarly community worldwide. The award could be bestowed on a person, team, or organization.

We thank our GA Awards’ Committee and its Chair, Michael J Morley, as well as the other members of the selection panels (Andrew Jack, Felicity Kelliher, Marie McHugh and David Zoogah). We are also grateful to Martinelli Elisa for her logistical assistance as deputy secretary to make these inaugural awards a reality.

Advisory Board: missions and functioning

by Alain Burlaud, chair of the Advisory Board

Advisory Board: missions and functioning

The Advisory Board in IFSAM’s governance

IFSAM’s governance is based on a subtle balance between three objectives: 1/ democratic representation of the Federation’s members, 2/ operational efficiency and 3/ expansion and diversification of its relational capital. Each of these objectives has its own governance body.

  • The General Assembly, which brings together a representation of all the members, decides on strategic choices and ensures the control of the Federation’s functioning in a democratic manner. It currently has 35 members plus two observers.
  • The Board of Directors, composed of 10 members, including its President and its Officers, ensures the operational functioning within the framework of the mandate given to it by the Assembly.
  • The Advisory Board, made up of a group of qualified personalities appointed by the General Assembly, allows the Federation to benefit from new academic networks and to introduce variety while having a strictly advisory role.

The Advisory Board is the result of a decision initiated by the President in the context of a modification of the statutes and validated by the General Assembly in 2021. It took office at the inaugural meeting on 15 November 2021.

The tasks of the Advisory Board

The Advisory Board is at the service of the General Assembly, the Board of Directors, and the President to shed light on a question put to it. It is consulted on the draft agenda of the General Assembly, on IFSAM’s strategy and on the themes of scientific events. It may also, on its own initiative, inform the various bodies of important events of which it is aware.

Finally, the Advisory Board also has important informal tasks such as maintaining a lasting link between those who have contributed to the Federation’s renown and those who are now in charge of its destiny.

The composition of the Advisory Council

The Advisory Board currently comprises 11 members as follows: North America (2), Australia (2), Western Europe (6) and Japan (1). Four of them are former IFSAM Presidents.

The Chair of the Advisory Board is elected for a three-year term to avoid the risk of being embedded in the position. The number of members is not limited by the statutes but must obviously remain reasonable enough to ensure that its functioning is not too cumbersome and does not compete with the General Assembly.
The current Chair is Alain Burlaud (France), who was President of IFSAM from 1995 to 1996.

Presidents’ Platform Meetings

by Patrick Reinmoller, director of the Office of the President Team (IFSAM)

Leaders of scholarly associations in management are greatly concerned that the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic might put their associations at risk and thereby disrupt the scholarly infrastructure that supports management education and research. These leaders seek to learn and adapt fast.

IFSAM has sought to address these challenges by providing opportunities for these leaders to gather and share experiences and knowledge, to learn and adapt faster in a setting that is conducive to open and confidential sharing of perspectives. We call these opportunities Presidents’ Platform Meetings (PPM). Over the last year, these quarterly PPMs have helped associations to navigate the crises together. For example, at one PPM in Spring 2021 the associations discussed their experiences with switching from face-to-face conferences to online conferences. Sharing and comparing their setups and systems used in, for example, Australia, Italy, and the US helped associations to think through the trade-offs of various functionalities and modalities of hosting online conferences be they synchronous or asynchronous, or hybrid. At another Platform Meeting in Winter 2021 the associations explored the theme of conference economics.

COVID-19 has led to many cancellations of conferences and meetings. For most associations, the annual conferences alongside the annual fees of their members are the most important source of revenue that provides the necessary means to support all activities and provide the scholarly infrastructure. Hearing from professional conference organizers how to enhance the economic viability of online conferences sparked discussions of best practices and new ideas among the presidents.

An upcoming PPM in early 2022, prepared with Nuno Barros de Oliveira, deputy director of the PTO, will focus on a key driver of value and revenues: conference experience. Representatives of Professional Congress Organizers and business schools will share their findings on how the acceptance of online conferences and the willingness to pay for such online experiences are evolving as we speak. Presidents of IFSAM member associations will discuss the key insights to learn and adapt faster. Platform Meetings help members to cope with the acute risk that COVID-19 poses and make the scholarly infrastructure IFSAM member associations provides to societies more resilient. The objective is to encourage the ‘maintenance of and synergies among scholarly associations of management’ (IFSAM Statutes) and to ensure their endurance.

16th IFSAM Congress (2022)

We are delighted to announce that IFSAM 2022 Congress will be held virtually in collaboration with ANPAD as a pre-conference activity of ENANPAD22 between 7th and 9th September 2022. The theme is: Opportunities and Challenges in a Changing Business & Management Higher Education institution (HEI) Landscape..

The programme of IFSAM 22 Congress will include a series 90-minute roundtable discussions that focus on management research, management education, and academia-management practice interactions. It will also include substantive discussion sessions devoted to the work of the winners of the inaugural IFSAM awards, and an exploration of the first IFSAM soft policy statement, on management research.
